Last night we had a really good practice. It was largely a “First Timers” night. It was our first practice without Dave. It was our first practice with Chris (who is a stand up stand-in) and many of the songs we played were for the first time. Also, it was the first time I’ve seen that ‘fridge in that good of a shape.
We played Better Than Ezra’s Good and did a nice job (first time), and Real Wild Child (first time) and after some searching I finally found the key it sounded pretty good. We played Secret Agent Man (first time), a song that I really enjoyed singing and P orchestrated a killer intro incorporating The Theme From Peter Gun and the James Bond Theme. It was awesome.
We played What’s Up (which is a misnomer and should be called What’s Going On, but who am I to argue) and it is WAY up there at times. The lead singer needs to practice that one a bit (first time). We played House Of The Rising Sun (first time) then we played it again where apparently I skipped through all the interludes.
We played Sex & Candy and I still love that song. We played another of my favorites in Chevy Van, which was Chris’s first time ever with that song. I don’t know about that because he was rockin’ it. We played Cumbersome and it was as good as always. I really like harmony.
We played our dirty version of Tainted Love with a new Reggae rhythm twist. It was so nice we had to play it twice. We played New York Groove in what I can only describe as “slide madness”, we did Stacy’s Mom (heh heh – heh), another perennial favorite, then we played What’s Up again - the extended jam version.
After that we played a jam-o-matic version of All Along The Watchtower (first time). Then we played Dancing In The Moonlight, a sentimental favorite of mine as I remember hearing that one as a kid and thinking I would like to sing that one day. Ah, good times. There did come a strange quote from that one, however, and I can’t remember who said it, but it went something like “this is kinda’ like bullfighting in the moonlight.” Or maybe I simply hallucinated that.
We played Louie Louie and it sounded great. We did Jenny and she was great and wound up the night with Blister In The Sun.
P secretly recorded us on a couple numbers and despite the sound quality, I liked what I heard.
There were, of course, some notable quotes and there was much humor to be had. And for those of you who often ask “Where’s the love?” Well there’s the love! Wes brought me a mic stand and P gave me a longer leash! It’s a beautiful thing.
“Is that a f@ckin’ geiger counter over there?” ~Wes
“I expect to see some antics!” ~P
“Why is kangaroo diarrhea funny? You’re asking questions I don know the answer to!” ~Wes
“Sweet.” ~Wes
(we have that last one on tape)
