JD

Well guys, we had two sessions last night: PP and AP (Pre-P and After-P). Much to my dismay and chagrin, there were no scented candles during either set.

Before P arrived, Dave and Rodney and I listened to parts of one of the new CDs that I made and played along with them a little bit. Dave will make copies of these CDs and they will be made available for your listening pleasure. The songs on the CDs are a lot of the songs on our master list that we have not yet played, along with a few on there that we have. Though be warned. Dave’s reaction to the Rock Me Gently version on the CD was near hysteria. And the version of Escape (The Pina Colada Song) was advertised as the original, but instead is a really bad dance version. Note to Dave: it would be best to skip over this one entirely when copying the CD.

PP songs included 1985, Rock Me Gently, All Along The Watch Tower, No Rain, Real Wild Child (a cool duet with Dave), and Lump by The Presidents of the United States of America, a band who Dave and I hold in high esteem, though Phillip, while insisting he is not being un-patriotic in taking his stand, does not equally share that same enthusiasm. Rodney is afraid of Lookin’ For Love.

I still think that if Dave sang These Boots Were Made For Walking, it would bring the house down.

One of the highlights of the evening was when Dave got a call from Jack Bower concerning some crab legs. That may have been some kind of code. The coolest thing that happened during the evening was the highly deft and skillful Frisbee-style across-the-room toss and catch CD transfer between P and Dave. We also had the perennial battle with the CD player and Dave stole Phillip’s batteries - perhaps, again, some kind of code.

Dave had some entertaining stories about his recent trip, but you had to be at practice to earn those. As a bonus, I had a super cool new egg shaker stand.

AP songs included Soul Man (and we decided to go back to the Blues Brothers version of it, and smoked it!), Black Betty (of which Dave is afraid), and a really cool Wild Thing/Louie Louie medley, which also came dangerously close to melding into Summer Lovin’. We also played Smokin’ In The Boys Room and All Along The Watchtower with some So Alive by Love & Rockets thrown in, just for Rodney. Dave says that we should work that song out into an extended jam to end the night with when we actually start playing in clubs. We also did our dark and dirty version of Tainted Love, What I Like About You (nailed it), All Right Now, and Secret Agent Man, with Phillip’s way cool all-spy review, to which he plans adding the Mission Impossible theme, and maybe the themes from McGyver and the A Team. We wrapped up with Real Wild Child, Sex & Candy, Dancing In The Moonlight (we need some orchestration as the chorus runs into the verse), Can’t Find My Way Home, and Gimme Some Lovin’. Sadly, we didn’t get to I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). Perhaps next time.

There were many memorable quotes of the evening.

“I seem to have misplaced my Wild Thing” ~P

“I’m in love with this bitch.” ~JD, referring to his microphone stand

“I didn’t practice it in G.” ~Rodney, said with a note of sadness and reflection

“When you experience a queef in the parking lot of a Community Cash, you know you’re living right.” ~Dave {what?}

“There have been many times when I’ve tuned my guitar to the dial tone on a pay phone in a bar.” ~P {what?}

“We listened to it earlier and I heard some weird bass shit going on.” ~Rodney

“What is that, Gershwin?” ~P
