It was about time we had our first Band Party of the Year. I think everyone had a great time, I know I did. I’m not much of a story teller so I’ll just let the pictures and audio tell the story.
Last night’s practice was the best one we have had in quite some time, at least as far as I can remember. First of all I should be calling it rehearsal instead of practice as we have now set a timeline / goal for our first real gig. I’m not going to tell you what date we are planning on as I don’t want to cause mayhem and unrest amongst our fan base as your safety and well being is, and always will be our highest priority.
We have determined that we need 3 complete sets to gig with. Last night we went through 2, and considering some of the songs we did haven’t been performed by the group in some time, I have to say that we rocked with only a few minor glitches. We have yet to make the list for set 3 but most of them are no-brainers, just a matter of figuring out which order they should be. Sets 1 & 2 probably need to be re-arranged a little bit, but other than that they are looking real good!
Last night we had a really good practice, even though it started out with Dave messing around with the lift on his boathouse. There seemed to be a power problem. I told him I would love to help him out but I don’t like to dance to the beat of alternating current and Rodney and I argued about who was going to dive into the water to rescue Dave when he was knocked into the lake by the electricity. Since I had a beer in my hand, it seemed perfectly logical to me that the job should fall to Rodney. Fortunately, Dave survived unscathed and determined that the problem was elsewhere.
As a bonus, Dave’s cousin, Clem showed up for practice.
We had a really good practice last night. The pirated recording of Big Hand Dave playing Green Onions and Secret Agent Man were debuted to great reviews.
Damn Pirates!!
We decided that we have enough material to make a band page on MySpace with actual recordings. I think Rodney should be in charge of that. He had his cool little recording device last night and I think we got some good stuff.
Last night’s practice was a lot of fun, despite the fact that we played a lot of material for the first time. It was a night of fab firsts as many of the songs we played were new to everybody. Thank goodness for PJ’s charts. As an added bonus, Corn-Squeezer Dave returned my hymnal and it was actually no worse for the wear, though he did forget it initially and fetched it whilst changing into his Magnum PI outfit.
We had a pretty good practice last night, despite the fact that Dave neglected to deliver my corn juice soaked hymnal back to its proper owner and Rodney had to shift his Mustang into Jeep to avoid getting trapped in Dave’s driveway. Dave has had some trees removed at the lake and the heavy equipment and heavy rain made a quagmire of his driveway. We forget what a really impressive piece of property our little practice retreat is sometimes, but now it’s open, expansive view of the beautiful lake is really something to see. Dave’s got himself a really nice piece of land there.
We had a great practice last night. We got through an amazing amount of material and had a lot of fun doing it. There was, however, the matter of mysterious corn juice on the counter. I’m not sure I would ask if I were you. And just so you know, in case it ever comes up - Dave has a can opener that could be used as a weapon. I also have to say that nighttime at the lake in the Spring is fabulous. I love the sound of those frogs down by the water.
Last night we had a really good practice. Sadly, the secret word will not be disclosed. Those are some sickos, those bandmates of mine. But we were introduced to a possible new song that I came up with using some software and sampling and that’s what we warmed up to. Dave was obviously threatened because the computerized drummer can count. However, its hands are smaller and not nearly so clever with a turn of phrase. Rodney, however, was inspired!
Last night’s practice was on an off night because of St. Valentine’s Day. You can’t practice on Thursday if Thursday is Valentine’s Day. Well, I guess we could, but then we’d be practicing other things later.
I blame Hallmark. The card company. You can’t go to the store - any store - without being assaulted by Red and Pink everywhere you turn. It’s just not natural.
We had a very good practice last night. Jeff, the official Big Hand Dave recording engineer, set up all of his nice beautiful recording equipment (and the man has some kick ass equipment) and made us all feel like rock stars. Our goal was to get five or six songs recorded well enough to make a demo. I think we’ve got what we need. We had a different vocal set up, which took a little getting used to, but it worked out well.
Then the sketching began. You simply had to be there. And it ain’t right.
